favorite books from the past year

Here are my favorite books from the past year (they weren't necessarily released last year):

Non Fiction: Do No Harm – Memoir of a British neurosurgeon

Fiction: TheNorth Water – Not for the weak stomached, but vivid and gripping

Short Stories: All ThatMan Is –Vignettes of European men in different stages of life

Graphic Novel: Shortcomings – Asian American relationship story

Fiction Runner-Up: The Underground Railroad – If you’re in the mood for a slavery story

I don't recommend the next two as highly, but they're worth a sniff:

Non Fiction Runner-Up: When Breath Becomes Air – Simply being able to write from the situation he was in says a lot about the type of person he was

Legal Fiction: Tuttle in the Balance – Light, funny—surprisingly juvenile at times—story of a Supreme Court justice, written by a con-law professor
