2014 best picture nominee reviews

The Oscars are this weekend, so here are my grades for the previous year's nominees. (here's a link to the past few years)

Same format as before, worst to first, I'll try not to give away too much.

Gravity – Special effects were incredible, but not enough to sustain this dud. I was looking forward to the credits. (I was recovering from the flu when I saw it, so maybe that had an effect)
Grade: C+

Philomena – It’s an interesting story, but not interesting enough to keep me awake on a Friday night with a 2-week old doing whatever 2-week olds do. (I missed a chunk in the middle.) (My mom was watching with me and she really liked it.)
Grade: Incomplete

Captain Phillips – Exactly what you expect, which is not bad. Spends a little more time with the Somali pirates than a lesser movie would. (Though according to the ship’s crew, not only was the real Captain Phillips not a hero, but his incompetence is what got them hijacked in the first place (by sailing too close to the Somali coast despite warnings to stay 600 miles away.) (Crew-members are suing the shipping company.))
Grade: B

American Hustle – Good, but not great. Christian Bale seemed to be doing a Robert-Diniro-in-Casino impression. Amusing characters otherwise, but I never felt like I was watching anything original and memorable. (This is a two-and-a-half hour movie; Cindy fell asleep 10 minutes in and woke up with about 5 minutes left and expected me to fully catch her up -- and for about ten seconds, was ever-so-slightly annoyed that I declined. )
Grade: B+

Wolf of Wall Street – The first time I saw this, the acting seemed better and it was called Boiler Room. Cindy was so bored that she got up halfway through and started building a dresser. She says the only reason it gets respect is Scorsese. It starts with a hilarious scene about legitimate finance but willingly goes off the rails and takes us through the life of a financial scam. But, it was the first one of these I watched a second time.
Grade: B++

Dallas Buyers Club – Great/terrifying story about trench warfare in the early battle against AIDS. First class acting, though it seemed like McConahey was just playing his uncle.
Grade: A-

Her – Is this the future of human relationships? I might find it extreme, but will Calvie in 15 years? (And visually stunning. I was not expecting that.)
Grade: A-

Twelve Years A Slave – You know what’s coming. No shortage of brutality, but it's riveting.
Grade: A

Nebraska – Unique, sad, funny, picturesque, and memorable. And a great original score. I’m usually not a fan of black and white, but I’ll give them a pass.
Grade: A+
